The
Southdown is one of the oldest English breeds of sheep. The
small
southdowns were extremely popular up until 1908. By the end of
WW1
however the breed had almost vanished due to demand for larger cuts of
meat. The small southdown was replaced by a larger, leggier
Southdown that are most common today. Robert Mock, founder
of the
Olde English "Babydoll" Southdown Sheep Registry, began a search in
1986 for the original small Southdown. In 1990 he came
across two
flocks and classified them as Olde English "Babydoll" Southdowns to
distinguish them from their larger kin. Mock then began the
Foundation Flock, comprised of the individual sheep that met the
specific breed
standards. Today the "Babydoll" registry continues to
ensure the preservation of these wonderful little sheep.
