Olde English "Babydoll"
Southdowns are an old world breed. Because of this they are less
prone to many of the diseases that plaque modern breeds. They are
smaller than the American Southdown, averaging 24" tall. They
have short legs, stocky bodies and range in color of black, white and
spotted. For a full description of the breed standard click here.
The Babydoll's small size and gentle disposition makes
them a perfect animal for the small family farm. They naturally
require less food and space due to their size. Overall they are
low maintenance animals. On good pasture they do not require any
supplemental feed. The ewes are known for being good mothers that
lamb easily. We rarely have to assist in births at our farm,
although we do like to watch the magic happen if we are so lucky.
Babydolls are a multipurpose breed. Some of their
uses are:
- Orchard/Pasture Management
Babydolls have made their claim to fame weeding and fertilizing the
vineyards of wine makers. They do not harm the trunks of trees
which makes them useful in orchards as well.
- Wool
The Babydoll fleece is 19 to 22 microns. It is an ideal blend
with angora.
- Companion Animals
Babydoll Sheep can pasture with a variety of other livestock including
horses, goats and cattle.
- Meat
- Pets
Babydoll Sheep's gentle disposition and small size make them an ideal
pet for adults or children
